5-Week Course

Tuesdays, 10:00am – 1:00pm

11th November – 9th December

The Round Tower, Broad Street, Old Portsmouth

Explore portrait and figure drawing through a range of expressive approaches in this five-week course. Working in charcoal and soft pastel, you’ll develop confidence in capturing form, tone and character.

We’ll experiment with different ways to build a portrait, from quick, gestural sketches, colour studies and to more refined drawings. We'll explore how tonal value, colour and different marks can bring life to the figure. You’ll also learn to use soft pastels to create subtle flesh tones and rich, layered surfaces.

This is a practical, hands-on course designed to help you strengthen your observational skills, experiment with materials, and develop your own drawing style with these mediums.

Please note: basic materials will be provided, including charcoal, a small palette of coloured pastels, and limited toned paper. If you’d like to expand your palette, we recommend bringing a set of good-quality soft pastels such as Jackson’s, Unison or Sennelier, along with any additional toned pastel paper you’d like to use. An email will be sent out before the course with further details.
