Our oil painting classes welcome absolute beginners and seasoned painters alike. Teaching is broken down into clear, step-by-step practices and focused studies, making complex processes accessible and enjoyable. We teach both alla prima(direct painting) and more classical painting approaches, supporting a wide range of artistic goals. Subjects include portraiture, the figure, the figure in context, pet portraiture, still life and landscape. Alongside developing strong drawing skills, you’ll learn colour mixing, temperature, brushwork, texture, and how to work confidently with different surfaces and painting mediums. A solid understanding of materials, brushes and paint handling is central to our teaching, helping you achieve the effects you’re aiming for.
Oil painting courses in Portsmouth, Hampshire
Our oil painting courses in Portsmouth, Hampshire include one-day workshops, longer six-week courses, and an Introduction to Oil Painting, which offers an excellent taster session for those new to the medium. Teaching is led by our experienced house tutors, alongside visiting artists who bring fresh perspectives and specialist knowledge. Courses take place both at our atmospheric Round Tower venue and at selected off-site locations.
