Join pigment maker and artist Lucy Mayes for a unique one-day workshop exploring the rich, tactile world of natural pigments and handmade oil paint — followed by an afternoon of putting your newly made paints into practice with artists Ella Kilgour and Katie Munro.

The day is divided into two hands-on parts:

Part One - Making Pigment & Handmade Oil Paint with Lucy Mayes

The day will begin with an introduction to the histories of pigment and colour, illustrated with rare, unusual and beautiful samples from Lucy’s own pigment collection. You’ll have the opportunity to handle and work with a selection of these materials, getting a closer feel for the extraordinary substances artists have used to create colour throughout history.

You’ll then get hands-on with raw umber, processing the earth pigment from scratch before burning it to coax out deeper, warmer shades. You’ll also work with a locally sourced oyster shell white and carbon black, grinding, mixing and transforming each pigment into handmade oil paint.

Part Two - Painting with Your Handmade Paints with Ella & Katie

Once you have made your own pigments and oil paints, Ella Kilgour and Katie Munro will take you through the process of using them to create a small oil painting.

You’ll explore how to apply your handmade paints, considering colour, mixing, mark-making and the qualities of the materials you have just created. This practical painting session will allow you to experience the journey of the pigment from raw material through to finished artwork.

A unique day combining material history, traditional craft and contemporary painting, giving you the chance not only to learn how paint is made, but to create a painting with the very materials you have made yourself.
